Creating a network in the music industry can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be!
Here are some of our top tips for getting started -
1. Attend industry events and conferences to meet other professionals and make contacts. In 2022 we attended the sold out inaugural THE Conference at Rock Lititz and it was well worth the trip to Lancaster County, PA. Attended by tour managers, roadies and everyone in between, the sessions focused on music industry mentorship, diversity in the touring world, safety on show site and our favorite panel - "Who to Call to Save Your Ass: The Importance of Strong Relationships. Registration is open for 2023 - drop a note if you're attending!
2. Utilize social media platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn and X to connect with other professionals in the industry. Follow and engage by sharing or reposting content, writing thought-provoking comments and asking questions relevant to the topic posted. Search for keywords and hashtags relevant to your specific area of interest, such as #tourmanager, #bookingagent, #tourlife, #musicindustry or our favs, #tourup and #takethehighroad
3. Take advantage of online music forums and communities to stay up-to-date on trends in the industry and find opportunities to connect. Check out a few Facebook groups (We hear that grunt. Yes, Facebook) such as Music Biz Besties or Music Career Networking. Are you subscribed to Pollstar or Music Row Magazine? Staying informed and connected is a great way to increase your knowledge and spark conversation with your music industry tribe.
4. Take time out of your day to reach out to people you admire or look up to in the industry - you never know who might respond. Always be respectful of other's time - a quick "hey, saw this article and thought of you" goes much further than an exhaustive list of all the things you hope to accomplish in your career and how they can help.
5. Don't be afraid to ask for advice or introductions from friends, family, or colleagues that may already have ties in the music industry. These people may already be unwittingly part of your tribe, acknowledge the value of the relationship when you ask for help in expanding your circle. Especially in Nashville, there's a good chance your neighbor goes to church with Garth's sound guy or your 5th graders bestie's mom is Halsey's publicist. At the core, building your music industry tribe is a great way to stay in the know, build great relationships and perhaps even grow your career.
